After Illegal Immigrant Killed Her Whole Family, Woman Is Fighting For Harsher Punishments

A woman lost her husband and two children in a terrible car accident, but she feels she's getting no justice. The person who caused the crash was engaging in illegal activities. He is an illegal alien, he was driving without a license, and he had been imprisoned and deported before. His actions led to the death of a man and two children, but he'll only be sentenced to two years in prison.

Courtney Hacking of Texas suffered a devastating loss when an illegal immigrant crashed into a car being driven by her husband, Peter Hacking. In the car with Mr. Hacking were the couple's children, 4-year-old Ellie Bryant and 22-month-old Grayson. The father and two children were killed in the crash.

The person who caused the crash was Margarito Quintero Rosales. Mr. Rosales is in the country illegally. He's illegally employed, and was illegally driving home from his job that day without a license. He fell asleep behind the wheel, drifted over the median, and collided head-on with Mr. Hacking's vehicle.

This is not the first time Rosales has been in trouble for breaking the law. He had come to the U.S. illegally a few years ago and was arrested and charged with burglary in Missouri. He fled the country, but came back. He's known for sneaking into the country using various aliases.

Rosales was convicted of criminally negligent homicide. Despite the enormous damage caused by Rosales’ crimes, he'll only face two years in prison - the minimum sentence. Federal agents plan to deport him when he gets out, but he's never had a problem sneaking back into the country.

Mrs. Hacking is furious. “Today for me is offensive to our family," she said after the sentencing to Rosales. "There’s no justice in what you’re getting today.”

“You weren’t supposed to be here. All of this heartbreak is because of you. You were in this country illegally for the second time. You were driving a car without a license, coming from a job you were illegally paid to do. Because of your selfishness, three beautiful people lost their lives.”

Mrs. Hacking is using her anger to bring about change. She wants to see harsher punishment when illegal immigrants commit deadly crimes. She's working with federal lawmakers to increase punishments because she sees being in the country illegally as an 'aggravating factor' in the crimes.

This topic has been the subject of a lot of debate lately. A large portion of U.S. citizens express great sympathy for illegal immigrants, believing they are the victims of an unfair system that prevents them from living in the U.S. legally. There is also a large portion of the country that feels that immigrants who deliberately break multiple laws to come into this country and live here are a threat to everyone.

In many states, if you knowingly participate in a crime during which someone is killed, even if you didn’t intend it to happen and even if it didn’t happen by your own hand, the punishments are harsher because you consented to participate in law-breaking. Many sanctuary cities strive to protect illegal immigrants from suffering consequences for the laws they break.

“On behalf of my husband and my children, I can’t let this go,” said Hacking.
