Award Winning Actress Passes Away

An actress best known for her work in the film 'Clerks' and later voicing her role in 'Clerks: The Animated Series" recently passed away. Though her acting career was short-lived, she is remembered fondly by her family and by those who she worked with in her most famous role.

Lisa Spoonauer died at the young age of 44 in her home in Jackson, New Jersey on Sunday. She is survived by her grieving husband, daughter and stepson. The cause of her death has not been released.

Spoonauer set upon a career as an actress in the early 1990’s, and in her brief career, she was cast in the 1994 cult classic 'Clerks' as Caitlin Bree. The film is a black comedy written, directed and co-produced by Kevin Smith. It was shot entirely on black-and-white film on a budget of less than $28,000 in the convenience store where Smith, at the time, actually worked.

It grossed over $3 million since its release. The film was well received by critics and launched Smith's career.

Smith first encounter Spoonauer in a community college acting class and claims he knew he wanted to make her part of his project.

He writes on his social media page, "She didn't sound like she was acting at all; she delivered scripted dialogue as if she was inventing her conversation in the moment, like people do in real life. Captivated, I approached Lisa cold in the parking lot after the class and said "'This is gonna sound creepy but... Do you wanna be in a movie?'"

Spoonauer told him she wasn't interested in doing porn, and Smith gave her a script to his movie. She eventually agreed, seeing potential in the indie film. "A complete stranger at first, Lisa quickly became one of the most important people I'd ever meet..." Smith recalls.

"Whenever we'd Facebook later in life, she'd gush about her baby girl proudly. My heart goes out to Tom, Mia and Lisa's family. Thank you for dreaming my dream with me. You changed my life, Lisa," Smith concluded in his tribute.

Other than her work on 'Clerks', Spoonauer only appeared in one other film. She played a small role in 'Bartender' in 1997. Soon after, Spoonauer left her acting career behind and had pursued a career in restaurant management and event planning.
