Woman Got Unusual Pregnancy Symptom, And It Hasn't Stopped For Eight Years

One young mom was delighted when she was expecting her baby back in January of 2008. There are a lot of strange ways in which a pregnancy affects a woman's body, but this mom got a symptom that stumped her and her doctors. The strangest thing is that even after the baby was born, it didn't go away - she continued to have it for eight years.

Lisa Graves spent eight years hiccupping. While most people might think hiccups are little more than an annoyance, for Graves they were a real burden to bear. She tried all the common remedies: drinking water, holding her breath, putting sugar on her tongue. Nothing seemed to work, though.

Graves got the hiccups in January 2008 when she became pregnant. The doctors told the expectant mother at the time that hiccups were a common symptom for pregnancy and that she shouldn't worry about it, but it seemed a little extreme.

“I started hiccupping when I was around four months pregnant with Emily,” Graves said to Caters News. “I hiccup every hour without fail. It’s really loud; it almost sounds like a scream. Some people have even said I sound like a dinosaur.”

She looked forward to giving birth, if for no other reason to put an end to the hiccup nightmare. Shockingly, though, giving birth didn't help. She continued to hiccup long after Emily was born, and even through a second pregnancy.

The young mother began seeing one specialist after another. They checked her gut, her stomach, her brain - they just can't figure out a reason for her hiccupping. They haven't found anything wrong with her, yet she persists at hiccupping an average of about 100 times per day.

“Luckily, the tests have come back clear, so I’m obviously relieved it wasn’t something more sinister,” Graves said. “It’s frustrating; I just want to know what’s causing them. There must be a reason for it.”

The family has gotten used to it. Graves' daughters don't even notice because she's been doing it all of their lives, and the rest of the family simply learned to ignore it.

Strangers, however, are sometimes surprised by Graves sudden spasms. “I get some really funny looks from people but I try to laugh it off, usually blaming it on whoever is with me,” she joked.

At least she’s in good spirits, but hopefully doctors will find the cause soon and help the hiccupping stop. It’s hard enough trying to get a full night’s sleep when you have kids. It must be impossible to sleep through the night when you’re hiccupping that violently.

If not, maybe Graves can get herself in the Guinness Book of World Records. Right now, the man who holds the title is Charles Osborne. He started hiccupping in 1922 when he was trying to weigh a hog he was about to slaughter for some bacon. He didn't stop until about a year before his death in 1991. He was 97 years old.

Graves just has to hang in there for another 60 years and she could have it.
