High School Soccer Game Is Stopped, And Spectators Are Stunned By Reason

The National Anthem gets a lot of disrespect these days, particularly from pro athletes making millions of dollars per year.

The anthem stands for the liberties that many in this country take for granted. Instead of standing in honor of those liberties and ideals, many have taken to protesting the anthem for the times the country falls short of realizing them.

That's not the case everywhere, though, as spectators at one soccer game learned.

A girl's high school soccer game in Great Falls, Montana was taking place not far from a U.S. Air Force base. At 4:30 p.m., on October 17th, the base began playing the National Anthem on their speakers and it could be heard in the distance.

It was right in the middle of the game. The head referee stopped the clock. Students on both teams turned toward the flag and stood with hands over hearts, and most of the spectators joined them.

After the anthem stopped playing, the clock was started again and the students resumed the game without hesitation. Someone watching the game filmed the incident, which was so simple yet so powerful a gesture.

Willie Pyette, coach of CM Russell High School girls’ soccer team, says that the 4:30 p.m. anthem happens every day as the military base lowers the flag. He says has made it a regular part of the team's practice to pause for the respectful salute.

“I have our team stop, stand at attention and honor the anthem,” Pyette said to Montana Sports. “Then we go back to practice. We all stand and show respect.”

All the students routinely participate in the anthem to show respect for the service men and women who sacrifice for their freedom. No one 'takes a knee' at this school when the anthem plays. It is a welcoming sight in the country when ‘opting out’ of the National Anthem and Pledge of Allegiance, and disrespect for the flag is at an all-time high.

The issue got national attention a couple of years ago when San Francisco 49 Colin Kaepernick began to ‘take a knee’ during the ‘Star Spangled Banner’ on the field. Many pro athletes followed suit, and even young children in school leagues started to imitate their favorite sports heroes by dropping to one knee in protest.

President Donald Trump’s made some comments that players who disrespect the flag while on the job at games should be fired for doing so, and the controversy exploded. Many long-time football fans have vowed to boycott the NFL if players were going to stage political demonstrations at games.

Many others threatened to boycott if players were denied their rights to protest, even if they want to perform those protests while on the job. The NFL had taken a lot of heat from people on both sides of the issue.

It seems that in all the controversy, these kids at Russell High School and their rival team remembered what is really important: that the anthem shows respect to the people who fought for our freedom.
