Man Lives In Home With Corpse Of Mother And Brother For A Full Year

A Minnesota man who lived with the dead bodies of his mother and twin brother has defended his decision, blaming his behavior on the trauma of losing his closest family members. The man in question, 60-year-old Robert James Kuefler, lived with the corpses for more than a year in his White Bear home. According to the Huffington Post, Mr. Kuefler has since been charged with “interference with a dead body or scene of death”, a minor misdemeanor charge.

The chilling living situation only came to the attention of the authorities when neighbors – concerned that they hadn’t seen Robert’s mother, Mrs. Evelyn Kuefler, in over a year – contacted police and asked them to check the family home, which was legally owned by Evelyn. After receiving the call, police officers from the White Bear Police Department were quickly dispatched to the home.

When the officers arrived at the decrepit home, they quickly registered the putrid smell of decaying bodies. After entering the residence, the responding officers found the mummifying corpse of Robert’s brother, Richard, and the largely skeletal body of the 60-year-old man’s mother.

According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Evelyn was found upstairs and Richard was discovered in the home’s clammy basement. After initially suspecting foul play, White Bear police officers have now concluded – using information from Eveyln and Richard’s autopsies – that Mr. Kuefler’s family members died from natural causes.

In a statement to the Associated Press, Mr. Kuefler has tried to explain his decision to keep dead bodies in his home. “I was traumatized. What would you do?” Kuefler said. “I am not some nut ball. People think I am, but I’m not. I loved them.”

During the interview, Kuefler also revealed that he first found his brother’s dead body in a chair. Mr. Kuefler would later interfere with the corpse because it was in an inconvenient position, telling the Associated Press how he “eventually moved the body to the bathroom as it was ‘in the way’.”

A month after his brother died, Mr. Kuefler also found out that his mother was dying. The day she passed away, Evelyn told her son to leave the house for a few hours. When Mr. Kuefler returned, he discovered that his mother was dead.

When Mr. Kuefler didn’t immediately report the death of his family members, he became concerned that police would try and pin the deaths on him. According to CBS News, this fear forced Mr. Kuefler to go to extraordinary lengths to convince other family members that Richard and Evelyn were still alive.

When other family members became worried about Evelyn and Richard, Mr. Kuefler began writing fake birthday cards and greeting cards in the writing style of his deceased family members. To sell the deception, Mr. Kuefler’s also told his other relatives that his mother and brother were suffering from a persistent medical condition and were unable to talk on the phone.

Dale Hager, a White Bear Police Captain, has urged Mr. Kuefler – who repeatedly told the Associated Press he hates counselling – to accept a psychological evaluation.
