91-Year-Old Keeping These WWII-Era Weapons In His Retirement Home Fridge

Military hand grenades are, of course, illegal to own or detonate as they are extremely dangerous. It’s a felony to be found with a hand grenade in your possession, and police are always on the lookout for them as it can be very difficult to tell a real hand grenade from the high-quality replicas manufactured today.

Real, live hand grenades (probably stolen from the military) have been found in the possession of criminal gangs in the past, and an old hand grenade occasionally surfaces at a garage sale or is dug up somewhere.

One place you would not expect to find a hand grenade, however, is at a retirement home. However, that’s exactly what happened at the Tappan Zee Manor Nursing Home in Central Nyack, New York (25 miles north of Manhattan) over the weekend.

Authorities are reporting that two hand grenades were discovered sitting on the top shelf of a refrigerator door in the apartment of an elderly resident of the facility.

Clarkstown police did not reveal how the devices were found, who found them, or where the grenades came from. They did note in a statement to the press that they appeared to be World War II-era grenades, and were discovered in the refrigerator of a 91-year-old man.

Local authorities evacuated the building, and a bomb squad team was called to remove the grenades for further analysis and disposal.

Of note, it seems that one of the devices was a training grenade, and it is not clear if either of the grenades were still capable of exploding.

At this point, it is also not clear who is the owner of the grenades. The police statement noted that the owner of the unit was ”out for medical treatment” when the grenades were discovered.
