9-Year-Old Terrified After Finding This In Her Backyard

A 9-year-old girl in Indiana is a hero after finding and rescuing a newborn infant left to die of exposure. The baby was found not a moment too soon.

The child discovered the newborn infant in field in back of her family's home. The infant was wrapped in a black towel with the umbilical cord and placenta still attached. The crying baby was sunburned and crawling with maggots when she was found.

Elysia Laub found the baby while playing near a creek.

"I just saw pink legs kicking away," Elysia told NBC Chicago. "I knew it was alive and I knew we had something. I could not second guess myself. I knew we had to get help."

The child immediately rushed to get her mother.

"I thought it was a robotic doll," said Heidi Laub. "Then I ran to the baby and scooped it up and I said, 'Elysia run to the house and call 911 as soon as possible.'"

Mother and daughter rushed the baby into the house and put a blanket around her. Help came, and doctors found that the baby was surprisingly healthy and going to be okay. She may have been out there for several hours, or up to a day.

Police are looking for who might have left the baby. Indiana does have safe haven laws that allow people to drop off unwanted infants in safe locations 'without fear of arrest or prosecution.' While this little baby’s mother didn’t leave her in a safe place, the infant was lucky an angel came to rescue her.
