76-Year-Old Man Denied Help By The VA - He Does Something Heartbreaking

A disabled U.S. Navy Veteran turned to a New York VA hospital when he was dangerously depressed and asked for help. The hospital refused to let him see a doctor and sent him away. Devastated and with nowhere else to turn, he took his own life right there in the parking lot.

Peter A. Kaisen, who served in the Navy from 1958 - 1962, suffered from severe depression. A tragic car accident in the 1960s left him permanently disabled, and he needed constant medication and care. He was in a terrible place mentally that day, and found the courage to go to the emergency room for help.

Unfortunately, help was not to be found. Staff at the Northport Veterans Affairs Medical Center refused to let him see a doctor for mental problems.

Kaisen was a regular patient at the hospital. His bills were up to date. Medical experts know —or should know — that when someone is in anguish with depression, going for help is a huge step for them to take. The VA sent him away, though, and that was the last straw for the suffering man.

Kaisen, in total despair, felt he had nowhere left to turn. He went to his car in the parking lot, pulled out his gun and killed himself.

His family believes someone dropped the ball, but they're hoping his death will be an example that inspires better care for veterans.

“Maybe we can save someone else’s life," said a spokesperson for the family. “That way, he would not have died in vain.”
