75-Year-Old Star Wars Star Suddenly Passes Away

Gordon ‘Drewe’ Henley, the actor who played a pilot in the original Star Wars film, passed away after a choking tragedy. He has a long resume of roles in film, television and the theater. He died on February 14th.

By far his most famous film was ‘Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope,’ in which he played X-Wing Squadron Red Leader Garven Dreis. Some of the footage of his scene was used for the prequel, ‘Rogue One.’ In this film, an extended scene of Henley’s character, Dreis, spoke to Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Biggs Darklighter (Garrick Hagon).

His Star Wars role was his last film role before his health went downhill. Before then he appeared in films such as 1971's ‘Quest for Love,’ 1970's ‘When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth’ and the 1967 film ‘The 25th Hour.’

On television, Henley appeared in shows such as ‘The Avengers,’ ‘The Doctors’ and ‘Wuthering Heights.’

Henley married actress Felicity Kendal in 1968, and the couple remained together for 11 years. The two split up in 1979. They had one son, named Charley, who perused a career as a special effects technician.

After the first Star Wars film, Henley was diagnosed with manic depression and retired permanently from acting. He was later diagnosed with vascular dementia and his health had taken a turn for the worst in the last year of his life.

Henley suffered from Parkinsonism, a condition that is related to long-term use of antipsychotic medication. Since 2015, he'd been admitted into the hospital six times, and mostly stayed in the mental health unit for elderly people.

He was hospitalized at the time of his death after suffering from a chest infection and dehydration. He reportedly choked on a fish pie while eating lunch in the hospital. An inquest into his death was initiated.

Nurse Bridget Selbera reported during "Almost halfway through the meal the patient choked. I gave him three back slaps and I called for help."
