6th-Grader Refuses To Stand For Pledge - Teacher's Reaction Leaves Parents Furious

A young student exercising his rights was faced with an over-the-top reaction from his teacher.

A public middle school teacher in Michigan crossed the line when she allegedly 'violently yanked' a student out of his seat. According to reports, the student, who was new in the school, refused to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance.

The child says he's afraid to go back to the school. The teacher has been placed on administrative leave and the incident is being investigated.

Stone Chaney just started sixth grade at the East Middle School in Farmington Hills. The middle-schooler believes that the school has already violated his civil rights after one teacher yelled at him and another teacher physically attacked him.

He says the controversy was stirred by his refusal to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance.

"The teacher consultant comes up behind me and snatches me out of my chair violently," Stone said. "I was so confused. I didn't know what was going on."

The young man argues that it's his choice not to stand for the Pledge. "I don't stand because I don't pledge to a flag," Stone said. "I pledge to God and family."

Stone's father is furious. "It's his choice to sit," Brian Chaney said. "I don't make him sit. And they should respect that."

Mr. Chaney says his son hasn't gone back to the school since the incident, and the family is looking to move so that their son can attend a school in a different district. Chaney says he's too afraid to go back to the school.

The family complained to the school and an investigation is underway. The Superintendent of the district released a statement, saying, "The District fully supports the right of each student to participate or not in the daily Pledge.

The teacher allegedly involved in the incident has been placed on administrative leave. At this time, the District cannot speculate about the outcome of the pending investigation."

Marine veteran Stephen Stevens told WDIV reporters that he wishes he could talk to the student and teacher. He respects the student’s rights, but isn't sure if the young man truly realizes what those rights are about.

"I would love to be able to talk to them and get their side and explain my side so maybe we could come to an understanding," Stevens said. "Because I get they have that right, but I don't believe they understand what that right really entails."

More and more incidents surrounding people opting out of the Pledge of Allegiance, National Anthem and American flag continue to stir up controversies around the country. The issue was brought to national attention when former San Francisco 49er Colin Kaepernick refused to stand during the anthem at games, and would instead ‘take a knee’ in silence.

After other pro-sports figures followed Kaepernick’s examples, school children also began to emulate their heroes and refuse to salute the flag.

Many have pointed out that the students are only exercising the very rights that the flag symbolizes. "If they're fighting for freedom, they're fighting for us to have choices," Brian Chaney said. "Then it's our choice."
