In Northern Ireland, an incestuous relationship between a 15-year-old boy and his 13-year-old sister resulted in a child. The teen mother and her child were initially put into separate foster care homes. A court now ruled that the child, who is now 2-years-old, will be put up for adoption.
The judge doesn't believe the now 16-year-old mother is responsible for the pregnancy; he feels she is a 'very vulnerable young girl' and the pregnancy was a consequence of how the girl was raised. “It is hard to identify any positive life experience which she has enjoyed,” he said.
The girl was initially impregnated by her brother at the age of 13, and gave birth at age 14. The teen girl and her baby boy lived in the family home, but both the baby and the teen mother were removed and put into separate foster homes.
The brother initially denied being the father of his sister's baby, but DNA tests have confirmed that he is. The two teens group up in a family with multiple problems and a long history with social services.
The girl wanted to keep the baby in the family, but due to ‘faulty parenting’ and a history of ‘sexual abuse,’ she is developmentally stunted and incapable of providing for the child’s needs. Local authorities petitioned the courts to place the baby boy up for adoption. The family of the underage mother are not able to provide suitable living conditions for her, or her baby.
The judge ordered that the mother is not capable of giving consent to the adoption, and ruled that the baby boy, now two, will be put into the adoption system.
The judgement allows for the teen mother to have the option of seeing her son at least once per year, but the issue of contact has not yet been resolved.
