Doctors Spot This Disease On The Rise, Issues Serious Warning - Here's What You Should Know

Hand-Foot-And-Mouth Disease (HFMD), a contagious childhood disease is sweeping across Georgia. Health care specialists believe that the disease will break records in 2017. Authorities say there is no reason to panic, but are offering advice to parents.

There is no vaccine for HFMD, and the disease is usually not serious. However, it is extremely contagious and the only treatment is isolating the patient to prevent the disease from spreading any further. In rare cases, people with health problems can suffer more serious complications such as meningitis or encephalitis.

Symptoms of HFMD include itchy red spots on the mouth, palms, or soles of feet. Symptoms can mimic the flu or a bad cold and may include fatigue or a sore throat.

HFMD is not airborne but comes from contact. If a child with the disease sneezes, coughs, wipes a nose, etc. then touches a toy, or table surface, the disease is easily spread to others who might come in contact with those surfaces.

Parents and teachers should know that good hygiene is the best way to combat the disease. Make sure kids are routinely washing their hands, and sanitize surfaces and toys to prevent the spread.
