Doctors Discover How An Infant Became Pregnant (Photos)

Surgeons in India were shocked when they discovered why a 15-month-old child with a severely bloated stomach was unable to eat or drink.

According to the Daily Mail, the doctors found a collection of bone, flesh and hair weighing nearly eight pounds inside the little girl’s abdomen. They quickly realized that the toddler, identified only as Nisha, was carrying the remains of her unborn twin sibling.

The fetus had grown an attachment similar to an umbilical cord to sustain itself on Nisha’s blood. Such a condition is known as “foetus in fetu,” which doctors have diagnosed only 200 times anywhere in the world.

Nisha’s mother and father, Raju and Sumathi, knew something was wrong because of the increasing size of the child’s belly and her inability to consume anything. Fearing their baby had a tumor, the parents took her to a hospital. They told the doctors that Nisha had been crying all the time for several weeks.

Physicians at Sri Ganapathy Krishna Hospital, a private facility in southern India, performed a two-hour operation to extract the dead fetus. “I first believed she had a cyst or tumor, until the ultrasound and scan showed that there were bony areas, calcified region and a teratoma-like structure,” the lead surgeon explained. “That was when I suspected that it was a foetus-in-fetu and quickly looked up some literature. It was only when I removed the structure, could I confirm that it was definitely a fetus.”

The Daily Mail explained that a “teratoma-like structure” consists of organs and body tissues.
