Boots On Mars? VP Pence Says The US Will Make It Happen

The Trump administration has plenty of ambitious plans in the works, and it’s safe to say that it has its work cut out for it to make everything happen. As most politicians do, President Donald Trump made a ton of promises out on the campaign trail. Unlike most politicians, Trump is actually trying to make all of them happen. Whether he’ll be successful or not is certainly open for debate, but it’s clear that his promises weren’t delivered solely because they sounded good.

Whether it’s tax reform, a health care overall, improving our national security, making some headway on immigration, or any of the other Trump White House initiatives, the pressure is on to make things happen. As Trump is well aware right about now, that’s easier said than done - and that applies even when you have a majority in the House and the Senate. The Democratic Party is vehemently opposed to Trump’s agenda, and party leadership will do anything it can to stop it in its tracks.

With all of that on the administration’s plate, there doesn’t seem to be a need to add anything else to it. However, Vice President Mike Pence has done just that by making a bold declaration.
As The Hill shares, Pence delivered some remarks during a tour of the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, and he gave the assembled crowd something to chew on.

“Here the Hubble Space Telescope, the New Horizons, and so many other technological wonders lifted off the Earth to give us a glimpse of our fellow planets, the distant stars and the infinite galaxies that are a window into our very past,” he said. “And here from this bridge to space, our nation will return to the moon, and we will put American boots on the face of Mars.”

So was Pence just caught up in the moment? Perhaps, but there might be something more to see here. Trump signed an executive order reinstating the National Space Council last week, and Pence is slated to serve as its chair. As such, you wouldn’t expect him to be writing checks with his mouth that the Council will not ultimately be able to cash. The NSC has been dormant for more than two decades, but the Trump administration hopes to bring it back in a big way.

“It will be my great honor to as vice president of the United States to serve as its chair,” Pence said.

So does that mean that Mars trips are right around the corner? Probably not, and they may even not happen while Trump is in office. However, the groundwork is being laid for future progress. Where that will ultimately lead is unclear, but you would have to imagine that those associated with the NSC are feeling awfully inspired right about now.

In short, in addition to trying to ‘Make America Great Again,’ Trump is hoping to take space exploration to the next level. Whether you agree with his politics or not, few can disagree with his ambition and vision to make big things happen.
