She Told Doctors She Would Either Kill Or Abandon Her Newborn After Taking One Look At Him

In most cases, simply giving birth to a healthy child is the most important thing to its parents. Of course, some parents may secretly hope for a boy more than a girl, or prefer an eye color, but nothing is more amazing than being a part of bringing out a new life.

For one mother in India, however, did not feel that way about her newborn baby. The moment she saw Adam, she said she would kill him, or just leave him at the hospital.

Baby Adam was born with numerous deformities that led his mother to believe he was cursed. He suffered from limb abnormalities, a cleft palate, no eyelids, and very little nose. That said, his brain, heart, and lungs were fully functional. His mother, however, did not want anything to do with him, and abandoned the infant at the hospital where he was born.

Without urgent medical care, Adam’s deformities could cut his life short, and with no one to take care of him, he was not likely to survive. Fortunately, a dedicated young couple stepped up to save the day.

Raja Paulraj is a hospital administrator at the well-known missionary hospital in India where Adam was born. He had just gotten married to a nurse who worked at the hospital named Jessica Cooksey Paulraj. When the newlyweds heard about Adam’s story, they decided to adopt him. Adam’s many challenges did not faze the determined couple, they were going to provide the boy a loving home.

Raja and Jessica knew that they had to get the boy medical attention as soon as possible, so Jessica contacted a friend who worked at the North Carolina Children's Hospital to ask for help for Adam.

Miraculously, senior surgeon Dr. John Van Aalst volunteered his services. Dr. Van Aalst and a team of medical professionals volunteered their services to help Adam with the various surgeries he required.

The first surgeries gave Adam eyelids and correct his cleft palate, so the infant could close his eyes and his mouth for the first time.

Van Aalst commented that the surgery was “the most challenging cleft lip” that he had ever performed. There will be several more surgeries for Adam in the future, but it seems the young boy now has a bright future ahead.

“Is he going to be perfect?” Dr. Van Aalst remarked in an interview. “Yes. He’s already perfect. Is he going to be normal by the world’s standards? Never.”
