Pastor Donates Kidney To Complete Stranger, Then Transplant Doctors Freeze While In Surgery

The selfless act of a local Pastor has been repaid tenfold in a heart-warming, fortuitous story that began in 2014 when Don and Brenda Herbert stopped to investigate a church yard sale. Tragically, Mr. Herbert was suffering from a debilitating and life-threatening chronic health condition. The unnamed condition had forced Don to accept a liver transplant in the months before October, 2014 but as he walked around the church yard sale, all Mr. Herbert could think about was the wondrous sound of gospel music echoing from inside the church. As a gospel vocalist for a singing quartet, Mr. Herbert had to investigate the beautiful music, entering the church and subsequently meeting Pastor Tim Jones.

The two men immediately hit it off, bonding over their love of gospel music and faith in God. As Don prepared to leave, Pastor Jones reports that “He got ready to walk off and I said, ‘you know we’re getting ready to have a revival,’ I said, ‘would you possibly come and singing in it?’”. Don excitedly agreed to join the singing group but the joyful news was tainted after doctors informed Mr. Herbert that his kidneys were failing and he would require a transplant. Despite being advised that receiving a transplant would likely require a long waiting period of 5-7 years, Don was not perturbed, saying: “I had a strong faith that God was going to take care of me no matter what happened”. However, things took a turn for the worse when doctors at Duke Medical Center informed Mr. Herbert that they had found blockages in his hearts, necessitating another serious procedure, cardiac catheterization. The intensity of this latest operation meant that unless Mr. Herbert found a kidney donor, he would be forced to go on dialysis.

As medical bills mounted, Don’s wife, Belinda wrote a post on Facebook detailing the struggles of her husband, asking for donations so she could help Mr. Herbert even if it meant donating her own kidney. In an incredible turn of events, Pastor Jones, who had only met Don two weeks previously, offered to donate his kidney, which unbelievably turned out to be a match. Coincidentally, while doctors were removing the selfless Pastor’s kidney, they noticed a life-threatening aneurysm. Consequently, Pastor Jones’ altruistic act saved Mr. Herbert’s life and resulted in the life-saving discovery of an aneurysm that would have most likely gone unnoticed.
