Muslim Couple Sue Pizza Shop For $100 Million Because They Used Pork-Based Pepperoni

One man and his wife were in the mood for some pepperoni pizza, so they called up a local Little Caesars to order one. The Michigan couple ordered a pizza and asked that it be made with 'halal' ingredients so that it would fall within their religious dietary restrictions.

After eating it, the couple began to suspect that the pepperoni on the pizza was made of pork. The man got sick and filed a lawsuit against the pizza company.

Mohamad Bazzi claims that he was clear about requiring halal ingredients on his pepperoni pizza when he ordered it from the Dearborn shop. To Muslims, one of the worst sins a person can commit is to consume pork.

When the pizza arrived, the man and his wife trusted that the pepperoni put on the pie was made of beef. The couple began eating it and halfway through their meal, they began to suspect that they were eating pork pepperoni.

Bazzi's wife was raised Catholic and converted to Islam as an adult, so she recognized the flavor of pork. Bazzi used to work in a pizza shop so he says he could tell the difference between the pork and beef pepperoni.

Bazzi claims he got violently ill after realizing he ate pork, now he and his wife have filed a lawsuit against the company for breach of contract. They're seeking $100 million in damages.

The shop does advertise in the window that it serves halal pepperoni, though it's unclear at this point what, if any, mix-up might have occurred.

Little Caesars chain put out the following initial statement: "Little Caesars cherishes our customers from all religions and cultures, and the communities we serve are very important to us. While we can't comment on pending litigation, we take this claim very seriously."

They did note, however, "At this time, we believe it is without merit."

Bazzi claims the lawsuit is an effort to raise awareness to help fellow Muslims, so they won't make the mistake of eating pork accidentally at the pizza shop.

This is only one of two lawsuits that have been filed against Little Caesar over their halal pepperoni. Ultimately a judge threw the case out as frivolous, but the couple plan to continue to pursue what they see as justice.

“The victory is they’ve conceded that they’ve been defrauding the community for a number of years, that they’ve removed the halal sign and they removed the pepperoni from their stores,” said Bazzi's attorney, Majed Moughni.

“Little Caesars is extremely pleased with the court’s complete dismissal of this meritless claim,” the company said in a more recent statement.

The Little Caesars has since stopped advertising that they sell halal pepperoni. They've removed the signs and say they're out of it.

No word on whether they ever plan to reinstitute the option.
Many people on social media have agreed that $100 million is an excessive amount over pepperoni.

"As with any place you order something make sure you tell them what you want [on it] assume [it’s] their responsibility for whatever reason being religious or allergy related," said a commenter on Mad World News. "Man don’t deserve a penny."

"Every pizza I’ve had with pepperoni on, it’s been obvious pepperoni was on it and I’ve never had to eat half of it to find out," said another on Mail Online.
