Mother Furious About Her Daughter’s Islam School Assignment - Gives The School A Piece Of Her Mind

A mom in Tennessee headed to a meeting of the Board of Education to complain about the curriculum. More specifically, she had a problem with one particular part of the curriculum: Islam.

Michelle Edmisten disagrees with the way schools are currently teaching Islam. She says some of the assignments go against Christian beliefs.

“It is time as parents, teachers, and administrators we stand up and take back our families, our schools, and our country,” Edmisten said. “I would like to see the Pearson book yanked from the school immediately.”

Public schools are not allowed to teach religions in a way that promotes them, but they are allowed to inform children about religions around the world. With Islam being a hot topic in recent years, some parents feel schools have gone overboard in attempting to promote understanding.

Curriculums are allowing Islamic religious teachings to slip into public schools in ways that would never be acceptable for other religions. For example, children will learn about the Five Pillars of Islam in class, when mention of the Christian 10 Commandments would usually be banned. Students will learn how to convert to Islam, even be asked to write the Islamic conversion prayer (the 'Shahada'); there’s no mention on the conversion process for any other religions.

Michael Hughes, Chair of the Board of Education, says the social studies curriculum is under review.

Edmisten is calling for action. “I would like to see parents, Christians, veterans, anyone that’s anyone, stand up for this fight. How can I, as a Christian, say that I have these values? And I want to instill these values in my daughter, but then say it’s okay go ahead and do it,” she said.
