Medics Do The Unthinkable To Newborn Baby - Parents Demanding Answers

Despite attempts to have Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) outlawed, many cultures continue with the dangerous, barbaric practice. Muslims in Singapore continue to circumcise infant and toddler girls, and it's perfectly legal. One woman is campaigning for women's rights in hopes of at least making the practice illegal.

Filzah Sumartono says medical clinics in Singapore are able to openly perform FGM on girls without any legal hindrance. The 'Aware' advocate reports that the practice is still very widespread, even if families aren't usually vocal about it.

"Whenever I bring up the subject with non-Malay they're shocked and can't believe it happens in Singapore," says Sumartono.

Sumartono says every female friend she has was a victim of FGM. Even young mothers who might not want to follow in the tradition are often face social pressure from older, more traditional family members. The procedure requires only that the parent make an appointment. It costs approximately $25.

Singapore isn't alone. FGM is legal in 45 countries. Because the practice is upheld, it's even fairly prevalent in countries where it is not legal among certain cultures.

The practice of FGM can cause health problems such as excessive blood loss and infection. It can also result in pain during sex and difficulty giving birth when female children are grown.
