The Horrible Fate Of ISIS 'Poster Girl' Has Just Been Revealed

In the wake of numerous terrorist attacks, fresh atrocities in Iraq and Syria along with the growing threat of homegrown terrorism, the story of Samra Kesinovic and Sabina Selimovic is increasingly relevant. 17-year-old Samra and her friend, 15-year-old Sabina, were of Bosnian ethnicity but had lived in Vienna for most of their lives after fleeing from war in Bosnian in the early 1990’s. Despite living a privileged life in the Austrian capital, it is believed that the girls became radicalized by an Islamic preacher known as Ebu Tejma. The girls fled their homes in 2014 so they could travel to Syria and live in ISIS-controlled territory, leaving a note for their families, reading:

“Don't look for us. We will serve Allah and we will die for him”. The young girls are only 2 of a predicted 130 foreign fighters that are believed to have traveled from Austria to war-torn Syria and Iraq.

After a difficult journey, the two girls arrived in ISIS controlled territory and became poster girls for the organization, appearing on ISIS websites, dressed in Islamic garb and brandishing assault rifles.

Sabina was quickly married to a jihadist soldier, reportedly sending a message to an unnamed French magazine, saying: “Here I can really be free. I can practice my religion. I couldn't do that in Vienna”.

However, it is believed that Samra was sickened by the reality of her newfound situation after being used as a sex slave in the de facto Caliphate capital of Raqqa. Tragically, as a result of their choices, both Samra and Sabina were killed in Syria with Samra being executed after an escape attempt and Sabina likely dying during a local skirmish.

While the age of the young girls is not an excuse for their recklessness and support for the terrorist group, it does highlight the susceptibility of young men and women to the moral freedoms, economic gains and religious structure promoted by ISIS on social media and ‘darknet’ websites. To prevent further radicalization, the physical and ideological threat of ISIS must be permanently crushed.
