Girl Refuses To Remove Her Niqab In Class - School Gives Her A Dose Of Reality

A dispute between a teen and her school has escalated to the point that the matter is working its way through the court system. As The Local explains, a Muslim teenager has been banned from wearing a face veil at night school, and she sued the school as a result of it.

The dispute stems from a school in Osnabruck, Lower Saxony in Germany. The unidentified female teen was informed by school staff that she would be unable to attend classes while decked out in a full niqab, which is a traditional and conservative article of Muslim clothing that covers the entire body outside of a slit in the eyes. The teen offered to reveal her face to a member of the female staff for identification purposes prior to the start of class, but education authorities in the area passed on her suggestion.

It’s unclear if the school took the initiative to address the girl’s attire on their own, or if they were responding to complaints from students or staff. Germany has been a hotbed of debate over the wearing of veils in public places, as there has been an influx of refugees into the country as the result of immigration policies implemented by German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

That debate is now crossing over into the country’s educational system, and it pits two of the country’s constitutional principles on opposite sides. On the one hand, there’s the issue of religious freedom, while on the other lays the state's right to determine educational rules. The case has gained a ton of traction in the local media, but it seems that the aggrieved young woman failed to show up for her initial court appearance.

It’s unclear if that’s due to the media attention or for some other religious reason, but the court was left with little choice but to find in favor of the school. She still has the opportunity to appeal the decision, but there’s no clear signs if that will be happening.
