The Freedom From Religion Foundation Wants an Illinois School to Include Satanic Imagery

Oftentimes, the Freedom From Religion Foundation targets schools citing a separation of religion from education. Yet, Wisconsin's Freedom From Religion Foundation wants the Rich Township High School District to lift its ban on satanic materials.

The FFRF wrote this statement, "Its reasoning is that Satanism is not protected by the First Amendment and that even if it were, the belief system's harmful concepts would severely disrupt the school environment."

In addition, the FFRF says they were contacted by a local citizen saying they were concerned because they believe a ban on Satanism is the equivalent of a First Amendment violation. Worldwide, satanism has around 100,000 followers. Some churches worship Satan, other use satanic imagery and trappings.

The FFRF then said that Satanism could be viewed less dangerous than mainstream religions like Christianity and Islam. The group points to sectarian violence and passages in the Bible and Quran that allegedly advocate violence.

The FFRF writes, "If this ad hoc reasoning is sufficient to forgive these passages, the same leniency must be granted to the texts of Satanism and other minority religions." The Rich Township School District has not yet responded to the FFRF's Feb. 17.
