Congressional Republicans Slam Obama Budget Proposals

House Speaker Paul Ryan this week called President Obama’s proposed spending plan “a progressive manual for growing the federal budget at the expense of hard-working Americans,” The Hill reported.

The Wisconsin congressman is among many Republicans who have spoken out against the $4.1 million budget package, which would fund government operations and programs until late this year. The proposal is “clearly about promoting (Obama’s) liberal legacy instead of securing America’s financial future,” House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady, R-Texas, charged.

The Republican National Committee alleged that the budget “reads more like a wish list for Hillary Clinton’s campaign than a serious proposal.”

Last week, the chairmen of the budget committees in the House and Senate told reporters that they did not intend to allow the administration’s budget director to testify at budget hearings. That would be a major break in tradition, according to The Hill.

Republicans plan to draft their own spending package because they oppose many elements of Obama’s budget, including the amount of money appropriated to the military. “Under the president’s vision, what we spend on interest on our national debt by 2022 will surpass that which we spend to protect and defend our nation,” House Budget Committee Chairman Tom Price of Georgia said in a written statement.

GOP leaders also blasted the president’s idea of imposing a $10-per-barrel tax on oil.
