Bill Donohue Doesn't Think We Should Celebrate Bruce Jenner Being Transgender

One of America's greatest Olympic athletes, Bruce Jenner, made global headlines when he announced that he was making the transition to become a woman. Under his new name, Caitlyn, he graced the cover of Vanity Fair and gained millions of followers on his Twitter account in just a few hours. Not to mention, the Vanity Fair cover photo had Caitlyn shot as a female.

While millions support his transition, Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights had a different opinion. He told "The Steve Malzberg Show," "That was obscene what they did. Shame on them. Look, Bruce Jenner is not the problem, he obviously has some psychological maladies to work out. The problem is with the elites who try to tell us that he's just like different strokes for different folks. The fact of the matter is people who get this sex reassignment surgery are more likely to be depressed, more likely to commit suicide, and as a matter of fact, the more out you are the more likely it is you're going to commit suicide. Ten years after people get the surgery, you're 20 percent more likely to become suicidal. We know this from the studies in Sweden."

In the 1976 Summer Olympics, Jenner won the gold medal in the men's decathlon event. Jenner will be receiving ESPN's Ashe Award, given to those "possessing strength in the face of adversity, courage in the face of peril and the willingness to stand up for their beliefs no matter what the cost.” Donohue added "We shouldn't celebrate and glamorize what is really a tragic situation
