Will Ferrell Draws Parallels Between Ron Burgundy And POTUS

Parodies of President Donald Trump are everywhere these days, and even his staunchest supporters can have a good chuckle while viewing the particularly well-done ones. As long as the parody doesn’t go out of the way to get all preachy, it can actually serve as a way to bring folks together. Well-timed humor can have those effects, and that amounts to a massive opportunity for the greatest comedic minds of our generation. It sounds like one of them will be keeping his toes out of the water this time, but that’s not for partisan reasons.

As the New York Daily News shares, Will Ferrell feels that there are some interesting parallels between one of his most iconic characters and the current commander-in-chief. Back in 2004, Ferrell brought the character Ron Burgundy to life in the film ‘Anchorman.’ Burgundy is the main character in that gem, and Ferrell perfectly nailed the portrayal of a newsman that sees what he wants to see and believes it as stone cold truth.

"Ron Burgundy is kind of like Donald Trump in a way," Ferrell explained. "He can say whatever he wants and it's, 'No, that's true.' Even though Ron's not evil, really."

Ferrell explains that the role was the favorite of his career, but there were actually concerns that the film wouldn’t resonate. Those fears proved to be unfounded.

"If I had to boil it down to one character, and I only get to talk about one, it probably would be Ron Burgundy, because in the kind of revisionist history of that movie, that took us forever for anyone to green light," he continued. "They just didn't understand what would be funny about guys in a newsroom."

While not everyone got the joke, more than enough folks did. The film would go on to inspire a sequel, ‘Anchorman 2,’ which debuted in 2013.

"There was a huge struggle to get it made. We felt like, 'Oh my God, what are we doing? We're making this movie that's going to be so out there.' And sure enough, it was received with kind of mixed feelings," Ferrell added. "I had a friend who told me he and his wife and another couple went to see it on opening weekend, and the other couple left in the middle of the movie and just said, 'This is weird, I don't get it.'"

The film also starred Christina Applegate, David Koechner, Paul Rudd, and Steve Carell, and the cast perfectly conveyed the message that there’s a lot of absurdity out there in both the news cycle, and from those that share it with the world. Burgundy’s interesting way of seeing things is a running gag in the film, and Ferrell is right on the money, as that’s been a running joke amongst observers of Trump.

It doesn’t sound like Ferrell will be adding his take on the current state of politics anytime soon, but fans of the funnyman can look forward to the release of his next film, ‘Daddy’s Home 2,’ which hits theaters on November 10.
