White House Reporter Slams Trump Spokeswoman For "Fake News" Claims During Press Briefing

An unusual outburst occurred in the White House press room on Tuesday when a frustrated journalist blasted President Donald Trump's spokeswoman. The spokesperson was commenting on a story that CNN retracted on Friday, and again began blaming the media for spreading false information. The reporter lost his patience.

CNN had put out a report last week that said one of President Trump's associates were linked to a Russian investment fund. They were quoting anonymous sources, and the story proved to be false. They quietly retracted it.

Deputy White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders appeared at a press briefing on Tuesday, and when questioned on the story she jumped at the opportunity to slam the media for her Commander-in-Chief. Sanders went beyond just complaining about the one CNN story that was retracted, and started lecturing the members of the press on deliberately dishonest reporting and the 'Russia-Trump hoax'.

"If we make the slightest mistake, the slightest word is off, it is just an absolute tirade from a lot of people in this room, but news outlets get to go on, day after day, and cite unnamed sources, use stories without sources," Sanders lectured.

Reporter Brian Karem of The Sentinel, a small Maryland-based newspaper lashed back at Sanders. "Dammit! Come on! You're inflaming everybody right here, right now with those words. This administration has done that as well. Why in the name of heavens?" he asked. "If we don't get it right, the audience has the opportunity to turn the channel or not read us.... You have been elected to serve for four years at least. There's no option other than that."

"What you just did is inflammatory to people all over the country who say, 'See, once again the president is right, and everybody else out here is fake media'," Karem complained. "And everybody in this room is only trying to do their job."

Sanders remained calm as she shot back, "I think if anything has been inflamed it's the dishonesty that often takes place by the news media.... And I think it is outrageous of you to accuse me of inflaming a story when I was simply trying to answer [a reporter's] question."

Karem, who also occasionally contributes to Playboy Magazine, became the man of the hour for liberals. Playboy tweeted after the exchange, "Yes, that’s Playboy’s White House Correspondent @briankarem, having his 'Network' moment—and giving 'em hell."

The press and the Trump administration have been at war ever since the president was elected. It is true that a free press is a vital component of a free society; it’s what helps prevent government corruption, tyranny and dictators.

On the other hand, when journalists become biased, when they pick and choose the facts they reveal, when they deliberately play a story up or down, when they spin the story to conform to a preferred narrative, when they worry more about ratings than objectivity and try to appeal to a particular audience or political party, then they're no longer free press. They become the mouthpiece for an agenda.

If reporters choose that route and begin injecting opinion into their reporting, they need to stop crying foul when they’re called out on it. They need to own it, because it’s also vital to a free society that the free press not try to manipulate public opinion.
