Walker Supports Constitutional Amendment To Give States Power Over Gay Marriage

The Constitution should be amended to allow individual states to ban same-sex marriage, according to likely presidential candidate Scott Walker.

"I personally believe that marriage is between one man and one woman,” the Wisconsin governor explained on ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday. "If the (Supreme) Court decides that, the only next approach is for those who are supporters of marriage being defined as between one man and one woman is ultimately to consider pursuing a constitutional amendment.”

Walker was commenting on the court’s pending ruling, expected this month, in a case that could legalize same-sex unions nationwide. He argued that “the decision on defining marriage should be left up to the states."
The Huffington Post noted that Wisconsin law now allows gay marriage. Walker said he voted for an amendment to the state constitution in 2006 that banned it. A judge overturned the amendment last year.
"Walker showed us today the same divisive policies that he has supported throughout his career when it comes to the rights of LGBT Americans,” said Holly Shulman of the Democratic National Committee. “We don’t expect more, but the American people should know what a Walker presidency would mean for the rights of their family and friends."

Another GOP presidential candidate, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, also favors a constitutional amendment prohibiting gay marriage.
