Walker: Don’t Burn the Flag to Protest Racist Violence

Americans are right to speak out against bigotry, but “burning the flag is not the answer,” according to Scott Walker.

Newsmax reported that the Wisconsin governor was referring to a group’s plan to torch the U.S. flag to protest racist violence, in the wake of the recent shootings of nine people in an African-American church in Charleston, S.C.

“What happened in South Carolina, we all need to be talking about,” Walker said Wednesday on “Fox & Friends.” He agreed that people are justified in “denouncing the acts and beliefs of the racist, evil man that did that.”

However, Walker denounced the Disarm NYPD organization for organizing a flag-burning demonstration in a Brooklyn park. The group said it is protesting “systemic racism," according to NBC New York.

"If there are resources diverted because of protests like this, it takes away from protecting the homeland and making sure our families are safe (during the Fourth of July weekend)," Walker said. "We need law enforcement focused on looking out for things. One of the best approaches is at the local level and everyday citizens. If you see something, say something."

Later this month, the governor plans to formally announce his candidacy for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination.
