Vice President-Elect Calls Ending Obamacare A Top Priority

Donald Trump has decided that he “wants to focus out of the gate on repealing Obamacare,” Mike Pence announced Sunday on Fox News.

The vice president-elect predicted that the new commander-in-chief will waste no time in “beginning the process of replacing Obamacare with the kind of free-market solutions that he campaigned on.” Pence was referring to the Republican nominee’s frequent promises to put an end to the Affordable Care Act, a key part of President Obama’s legacy.

The Hill pointed out that since winning the election and meeting with Obama at the White House, Trump has appeared to moderate his views on the issue. The president-elect, seeming to suggest he will not advocate full repeal of the law, told The Wall Street Journal that “either Obamacare will be amended, or repealed and replaced.”

Trump revealed that he now favors at least two aspects of the health-care system: the rule that insurance companies cannot deny coverage because of pre-existing medical conditions, and the provision allowing people younger than 26 years of age to get coverage through their parents’ insurance plans. “I like those very much,” the president-elect said in his interview with the Journal.

Congressional GOP leaders have long sought to rescind Obamacare, but faced a presidential veto if they attempted to carry out their goal. With a Republican in the White House, the law is in greater jeopardy than ever before. Among those anxiously awaiting the outcome of the political battle are the 20 million people who have health insurance because of Obamacare.
