U.S. Navy Officer Charged With Espionage After Sharing Secrets With China

In a startling discovery, a U.S. Navy officer, born in Taiwan, has been charged with two counts of espionage for passing classified information to China.

The lieutenant commander's name is being withheld in court papers, but he's being held at Naval Consolidated Brig Chesapeake, Virgina after appearing at the military's equivalent of a preliminary hearing at Norfolk Naval Station on Friday. Although, an unnamed U.S. official identified the accused as Lt. Cmdr. Edward C. Lin. In some cases, the charges can carry the death penalty.

Due to national security concerns, the charge sheets were heavily redacted. They do say he communicated secret information "relating to the national defense to representatives of a foreign government." Other charges include breaking military law by hiring prostitutes and committing adultery.

The officer is part of a unit that provides airborne anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare and maritime intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations from planes such as the E-P3E Aries II, P-8A Poseidon, P-3C Orion and unmanned MQ-4C Triton, USNI and the Pilot. In addition, details are being withheld because the case is designated a national security case.
