U.S. Embassy Celebrates July 4th In June

Out of deference to Ramadan, the United States Embassy in Indonesia celebrated the Fourth of July on June 4 in order to avoid disrupting the time of fasting--which, starts on June 17 and lasts one month. The event celebrated the 239th U.S. Independence and was themed "Green" development to convey America's commitment to building and maintaining an environmentally-conscious economy. Overseeing the event were U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia, Robert O. Blake, and U.S. Ambassador to ASEAN, Nina Hachigian.

In attendance were several high-status Indonesian officials such as Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja, Transportation Minister Ignasius Jonan, Coordinating Economic Minister Sofyan Djalil, Deputy Foreign Minister AM Fachir and Industry Minister Saleh Husin. Part of the festivities were brass band performances of the Star-Spangled Banner and the Indonesian national anthem, Indonesia Raya. During the event, Blake praised Indonesia's success as a fully-functioning democracy and he said “The US will continue to support Indonesia in the future through its democratic achievements. Democracy is an American value which we have championed since [the country’s birth in] 1776."
