US Diplomat Goes Out In Blaze Of Glory With Resignation Letter Ripping Trump Administration

There’s some different schools of thought on the best course of action when you’ve decided to move on and seek greener pastures. Leaving a position of significance is not the easiest decision, and it can also make things a little difficult for those that you are leaving behind. As such, one school says that it’s good form to do all that you can to ensure a smooth transition. It’s a classy move, and it allows you to move on with your head held high and your reputation intact.

Another school of thought offers up a vastly different perspective. That school suggests you should completely incinerate the bridge that was once standing between you and your former place of employment. This leads to a ton of feelings of resentment, but the theory suggests that you will feel a whole lot better after getting things that have been building up off of your chest. Whether you actually will feel better or not is no sure thing, but it’s still the preferred course for some folks.

As the Independent Journal Review shares, that path was chosen by former US diplomat Elizabeth Shackelford, who dropped an absolutely scathing resignation letter on Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. The letter was obtained by the outlet Foreign Policy, and it’s chock full of some eye-popping assertions from Shackelford.

“I have deep respect for the career Foreign and Civil Service staff who, despite the stinging disrespect this Administration has shown our profession, continue the struggle to keep our foreign policy on the positive trajectory necessary to avert global disaster in increasingly dangerous times,” Shackelford wrote. “With each passing day, however, this task grows more futile, driving the Department's experienced and talented staff away in ever greater numbers.”

There’s no reading between the lines necessary for this one. Shackelford is clearly in disagreement with the Trump administration’s policies, and she’s doing the right thing by stepping aside. That said, just because she disagrees with them, it doesn’t mean that she is correct. She makes it clear that she feels that she is, and she implored Tillerson “to stem the bleeding by showing leadership and a commitment to our people, our mission, and our mandate as the foreign policy arm of the United States.”

She then decided that it would be appropriate for her to give Tillerson some unsolicited career advice.

“If you are unable to do so effectively within this Administration, I would humbly recommend you follow me out the door,” she added.

The future of Tillerson in the Trump administration has been the subject of much speculation, and there are rumblings that he may resign in the New Year. We’ll have to wait and see how that plays out, but if he determines that he’s unable to effectively represent the current administration and its policies, then moving on would be the right call. However, we can safely assume that Tillerson would do so in a more low-key and classy manner. Different strokes for different folks, but only one of the differing paths allows you to walk away with your reputation intact.
