Two Dreamers In Two Separate Incidents Arrested Under Suspicion Of Human Smuggling

Two so-called 'Dreamers' who were living in the U.S. under the DACA program are in federal custody. Both men, in separate incidents, allegedly attempted to smuggle Mexican nationals into the U.S.

The incidents have fueled the debate over the DACA negotiations.

The first incident happened on Wednesday near Torrey Pines State Beach in California. A 20-year-old DACA recipient whose status had expired was pulled over by border patrol agents.

Two illegal immigrants from Mexico were found in his car. The undocumented immigrants admitted that they were part of a human smuggling attempt.

On Thursday morning, near Campo, California, a 22-year-old DACA recipient was pulled over after authorities deemed the vehicle suspicious. The 22-year-old, a Mexican national living in Riverside, and his passenger admitted that they were scouting an area for human smugglers. They, too, were taken into custody.

The suspects will reportedly be deported pending legal procedures, according to Federal agents.

The two arrests come at a sensitive time. The DACA program is slated to expire in March, and many advocates for 'Dreamers' have been pushing for a new deal to be made.

Advocates of the DACA program say that children brought into America illegally are less likely to commit crimes than legal-born Americans.

Trump offered a pathway to citizenship for 1.8 million 'Dreamers', only 800,000 of which are enrolled in the current DACA program, in exchange for $20 billion to build a border wall, and another $5 billion to ramp up border security.

He also wants enforcement practices that would involve putting an end to chain migration.

Chain migration has been viewed as a big problem because it currently allows legal immigrants to bring family members, no matter how distant, into the country as well. According to Trump's deal, the only people an immigrant could bring in would be spouses and children.

Democrats and Dreamers alike have rejected the president's deal, claiming they won't agree to the border wall or to limiting chain migration.

The two sides appear to be at an impasse. The president blasted Democrats for not taking the deal.

“I have offered DACA a wonderful deal, including a doubling in the number of recipients & a twelve year pathway to citizenship, for two reasons: (1) Because the Republicans want to fix a long time terrible problem. (2) To show that Democrats do not want to solve DACA, only use it!” Trump tweeted.

“Democrats are not interested in Border Safety & Security or in the funding and rebuilding of our Military. They are only interested in Obstruction!” he added later.

Trump's own party is also unhappy with the deal. Many Republicans are furious at Trump for offering amnesty to 1.8 million undocumented immigrants.

According to immigration attorney Leon Fresco, the deal is dead.

"Thursday pretty much lined it up as the final verdict," Fresco said.

"When Trump proposed something that in orthodoxy was not possible in the Democrat world and got criticized by the right, that was the end of the deal, because how can Trump agree to something more liberal now? ... For both sides, the deal is completely unacceptable, so that's what makes this very complicated," Fresco concluded.

It's unclear what will become of Dreamers once the DACA program expires next month.
