Twitter Users Blast George Takei For His Take On The Scalise Shooting

In the wake of a tragedy or an incredibly scary event, it’s in incredibly poor taste to use that as an opportunity to make some kind of a political statement. Nonetheless, users the world over make that mistake all the time, and the end result is they end up being royally blasted for being so insensitive. Quite simply, there’s a time and a place for things, and the aftermath of a scary incident is neither the time or the place to be spouting your personal beliefs. As the Independent Journal Review shares, last week’s frightening shooting in Alexandria provided us with plenty of unfortunate evidence that some users on social media simply don’t care.

A deranged gunman opened fire on a GOP Congressional baseball practice, and Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) was critically wounded. Four others were seriously wounded as well, and the gunman was shot dead. This was one of those moments that presented an opportunity for everyone to take a step back and realize that - just maybe - the over the top political rhetoric that has consumed the nation is going way too far. While many folks did just that, others saw the shooting as the perfect opportunity to inflame things even more.

Star Trek actor George Takei fell into that category, as he decided that the shooting represented a fabulous time for him to share his thoughts with the world.

“The universe doesn't joke around. The officer who saved bigoted, homophobic Rep. Steve Scalise during baseball practice was a black lesbian,” read one tweet.

“And yet his website still espouses 'Family Values' and protecting the 'Sanctity of Marriage'," read another.

Takei is implying that Scalise is a bigot and a homophobe because he has come out in support of traditional marriage between a man and a woman. For good measure, he decided to drag the race and sexual orientation of the police officer that saved Scalise into the discussion. In Takei’s mind, this is something resembling karma. How brilliant and progressive! Many users were not pleased with Takei’s attention grab, and they proceeded to let him have it.

“That homophobic bigot who has entrusted his life to her for years, and was saved by her without thinking twice,” shared one user.

“Pathetic attempt to make people forget that leftists like you are whipping people up in making lists of conservatives to kill,” shared another.

“George doesn't realize how demeaning this is. She is a person with a name and family. He's reduced her simply to a 'black lesbian'," chimed in a third user.

This is just a small sampling of the shade that was thrown back in Takei’s direction. While he accomplished his goal of having people paying attention to him, he also exposed himself as an insensitive nincompoop that is incapable of recognizing when it’s time to take off the partisan hat.

We get it, Takei. You are so much more advanced than everyone else that you manage to see ‘karma’ in this terrible situation. Kudos to you. The rest of the evolved wing of the human race will continue hoping for Scalise and the others to make a full recovery, and we’ll also use it as an opportunity to figure out how we can do our part to encourage others to take a deep breath when they get all riled up about political stuff.
