Trump's Son Accuses Former Adviser Bannon Of 'Undermining The President'

Donald Trump Jr. did not like what former chief White House strategist Stephen Bannon had to say in a soon-to-be-published book about the early days of the president’s administration.

“Steve had the honor of working in the White House & serving the country,” the president’s eldest son tweeted on Wednesday.

“Unfortunately, he squandered that privilege & turned that opportunity into a nightmare of backstabbing, harassing, leaking, lying & undermining the President. Steve is not a strategist, he is an opportunist.”

According to The Hill, the attack was a reaction to Bannon’s criticism of a meeting Trump Jr. held with a Russian lawyer during the 2016 presidential campaign at Trump Tower in New York City. The lawyer, who reportedly was linked to the Kremlin, allegedly promised to turn over “dirt” about Hillary Clinton.

In the book, written by Michael Wolff, Bannon described the meeting as “treasonous” and “unpatriotic.”

Though Trump Jr. insists that the lawyer did not give him any incriminating information concerning Clinton, the president’s critics have cited the meeting as an example of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia to interfere in the election. Others who attended the meeting included Paul Manafort, who chaired the Trump campaign at the time; and Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law, who later became a top White House adviser.

Bannon told Wolff there is “zero” chance that Trump did not know about the meeting. The book quotes the former White House aide, apparently addressing the president, as having said: “Even if you thought that this was not treasonous, or unpatriotic, or bad s**t, and I happen to think it’s all of that, you should have called the FBI immediately.”

Trump fired back by telling his Twitter followers: “Stephen Bannon has nothing to do with me or my presidency. When he was fired, he not only lost his job, he lost his mind.”

The president claimed that the ex-strategist has had “no influence” regarding the administration’s policies. After Trump fired him last year, Bannon returned to his previous job of running the far-right Breitbart News website.

He still “has the president’s ear,” according to The New York Times.

"Steve was rarely in a one-on-one meeting with me and only pretends to have had influence to fool a few people with no access and no clue, whom he helped write phony books," Trump said, referring to Wolff’s “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House.” In another tweet, the president wrote: “Steve pretends to be at war with the media, which he calls the opposition party, yet he spent his time at the White House leaking false information to the media to make himself seem far more important than he was.”

Bannon predicted that the president's son will pay a political price for his meeting with the Russian operative. “They’re going to crack Don Junior like an egg on national TV,” he said.

The former aide was one of more than 200 people Wolff interviewed for the book, which “is full of explosive claims about Trump, his family and his staff, and paints a picture of a campaign and administration wracked by chaos and infighting,” according to The Hill.
