Trump's Popularity Is Surging - Melania's, That Is

While the only political polls that really matter come in the form of the final vote tallies - see President Donald Trump’s stunning victory over Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton for confirmation - pollsters have plenty of things on their plate to keep them busy. Political aficionados are obsessed with numbers, and members of the press seem to share the passion for them. Anytime a poll of significance on Trump’s current approval rating comes out, it will be shouted from the rooftops and presented as a stone cold interpretation of the pulse of the country.

If we use that logic, it looks like the country is pretty enamored with the First Lady of the United States, Melania Trump. As Fox News Insider shares, her approval rating has been on a serious upward trajectory since January. According to a recent Gallup poll, Melania’s approval rating sits at 54 percent, a whopping 17 points higher than it was at the beginning of the year. Andy Och, an author and expert on the history of America's first ladies, recently appeared on Fox News to offer up some insight into what the numbers mean.

“The more we see of her, the more we like her," he said.

Och points to one incident in particular that marked a turning point for FLOTUS. After the White House was decorated for the holidays, she offered up some warm wishes on social media while sharing some photos.

“The decorations are up! @WhiteHouse is ready to celebrate! Wishing you a Merry Christmas & joyous holiday season!” she wrote.

The trolls came out en masse, but it backfired in spectacular fashion. Even some of Trump’s biggest critics agreed that lines were being crossed unnecessarily in the name of political talking points.

"People on both sides of the aisle were saying, 'Why don't we leave Christmas out of this?'” Och continued. “And no matter what your politics are, we don't have to destroy and tear down the first lady for her decorations."

Och also indicates that average folks are downright sick and tired of the negative and biased coverage of the Trump administration, but we’ll have to wait and see about that. If the negativity gets turned down several octaves, then we’ll assume that the mainstream media has gotten the message loud and clear that people are no longer interested in what they have to say. If they continue to treat every day as if it’s the end of the world, then we can only assume they have determined that folks haven’t had their fill just yet.

As for the approval ratings, what’s good news for Melania isn’t necessarily great news for her husband. The president’s approval rating is hovering around 41 percent these days. While that doesn’t sound all that great, it’s important to remember that virtually every major poll pointed to Clinton winning in a landslide last year. While that doesn’t necessarily mean that the approval rating polls are wildly off the mark, it does provide some interesting food for thought. The way that people answer polls in relation to how they really think and feel is certainly open for debate, as is the ideological makeup of poll respondents.

So is it true that nearly 60 percent of the country can’t stand Trump or not? We don’t know, but we’ll have a crystal clear answer to that question on Election Day in 2020.
