Trump's Favorite Justice Had This To Say About Those Who Suppress Flag Protesters

The Supreme Court justice most admired by President Trump once made his position on flag protests abundantly clear. The former justice believed that only a “tyrant” would deny free-speech rights.

The Huffington Post suggested that the late Justice Antonin Scalia would have opposed Trump’s demand that National Football League team owners fire players who protest racial injustice by refusing to stand for the national anthem before games.

In a 2012 CNN interview, Scalia declared: “If I were king, I would not allow people to go around burning the American flag. However, we have a First Amendment, which says that the right of free speech shall not be abridged ― and it is addressed in particular to speech critical of the government. That was the main kind of speech that tyrants would seek to suppress.” The conservative judge was defending the high court’s rulings in 1989 and 1990 that citizens have a constitutional right to burn U.S. flags as a form of protest.

Hundreds of NFL players have sat or kneeled during the “Star Spangled Banner” the past two Sundays. The demonstrations, which began last year following shootings of unarmed African-Americans by white police officers, have grown since the president started criticizing the athletes.

“Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘get that son of a b**** off the field right now, he’s fired?’” Trump asked the crowd at a rally for a Senate candidate in Huntsville, Ala., on Friday. He followed up over the weekend by tweeting: “If a player wants the privilege of making millions of dollars in the NFL, or other leagues, he or she should not be allowed to disrespect our Great American Flag or Country and should stand for the National Anthem. If not, YOU’RE FIRED. Find something else to do.”

In subsequent messages, the president wrote: “Courageous Patriots have fought and died for our great American flag. We MUST honor and respect it. Make America Great Again! Sports fans should never condone players that do not stand proud for their National Anthem or their Country. NFL should change policy!”

NFL officials and team owners are refusing to comply with the president’s demands. On Sunday, several owners joined their players in kneeling or standing with locked arms during the anthem. The protesters insist that rather than ridiculing the flag or the country, their goal is to raise awareness about racism and police violence.

According to CNN, New Orleans Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan explained: “I’m in complete solidarity with the entire movement. But as I’m sitting my hand is on my heart, as I’m sitting my eyes are searching for the flag, as I’m sitting I’m singing as I have done every time for as long as I remember. At the end of the national anthem I’m still kissing the flag. … That being said, it all starts with wanting to bring to light everything we have to go through.”

Tyrod Taylor, the Buffalo Bills quarterback, added: “We’ve got to keep talking about it. … We believe in love and equality, so if guys want to keep doing that then we’re going to support them. … Last week was kind of a special moment because the president had said something two days before a game.”
