Trump Urged To Spy On Muslim-Americans

Even though a judge ruled that New York City’s former Muslim-surveillance program was unconstitutional, one of the state’s congressmen wants Donald Trump to enact such an initiative on the federal level when he becomes president.

The Huffington Post reported that Republican Rep. Peter King met with the president-elect Thursday at Trump Tower. “The main issues I discussed were what we have to do to have the Justice Department and the FBI be more leaning-forward when it comes to investigating Islamic terrorism,” the lawmaker said. “I suggested a program similar to what (Police) Commissioner (Ray) Kelly did here in New York, and that we can’t worry about political correctness.”

King was referring to the NYPD’s policies following the 9/11 attacks on the city. The department’s Demographic Unit spied on Muslim student organizations, as well as Muslim-owned businesses and mosques. Officers also listened in on conversations involving members of the Islamic faith, and monitored Muslims who had changed their last names. The operations ended after several years because “unfortunately, the Civil Liberties Union and The New York Times didn’t like (it),” according to King.

The congressman argued that Demographic Unit personnel “were very effective in stopping terrorism, and they really should be a model for the country.” However, NYPD officials conceded in 2011 that the spying had revealed no evidence of terrorist plots in New York or New Jersey. The following year, the City University of New York School of Law issued a report alleging that the program created “a pervasive climate of fear and suspicion, encroaching upon every aspect of (Muslims’) individual and community life.”
