Trump Unloads On NFL As Anthem Protests Continue

President Donald Trump has ratcheted up his war of words with the National Football League, but it remains a one-sided affair. The commander-in-chief continues to call attention to the fact that the National Anthem protests are still going on, and it’s quite clear that he feels the powers that be at the NFL could be doing a whole lot more to put the matter to bed once and for all. While league officials, owners, and players have reportedly met over the protest issue, that hasn’t stopped some players from kneeling or sitting when the anthem plays prior to the start of games.

As the Daily Mail shares, Trump has called attention to the anthem protests a number of times on social media, and it doesn’t look like he has any intention of letting it go until there’s some kind of resolution.

“At least 24 players kneeling this weekend at NFL stadiums that are now having a very hard time filling up,” he wrote in one post. “The American public is fed up with the disrespect the NFL is paying to our Country, our Flag and our National Anthem.”

He did it once again on Friday, as the fact that New York Giants player Olivier Vernon took a knee for the anthem prior to the start of a game on Thanksgiving night really ticked him off.

“Can you believe that the disrespect for our Country, our Flag, our Anthem continues without penalty to the players?” the president posted. “The Commissioner has lost control of the hemorrhaging league. Players are the boss!”

It’s unclear why Vernon took a knee for the anthem, and there’s an overall lack of clarity as to why the protests continue. There have been varying answers as to what the players are even protesting to begin with, and the vast majority of the viewing public is quite confused as a result. Whether it’s the player’s intention or not, the sight of a highly-compensated grown man refusing to stand for the anthem because he’s upset about something is off-putting to many folks.

Rumors have swirled that league officials are floating an unusual idea to ward off the controversy, and Trump wasn’t all that pleased about that either.

“The NFL is now thinking about a new idea – keeping teams in the Locker Room during the National Anthem next season. That’s almost as bad as kneeling!” he wrote. “When will the highly paid Commissioner finally get tough and smart? This issue is killing your league!”

Keeping the players in the locker room is the equivalent of turning a blind eye to the protests, which is the tactic that the league has taken all along. That’s led to the problem snowballing to the point that many viewers and fans are completely turned off, and many have tuned out as a result. It remains unclear why the league can’t simply come together with the players, owners, and anyone else associated with the league to come up with a solution that would allow the players to express their angst in a more constructive fashion. In any event, it looks like Trump is going to keep pounding the drum until that solution is found.
