Trump Supporters Sorry the South Lost the Civil War

A recent survey in South Carolina revealed that many Republicans who intend to vote for Donald Trump in Saturday’s presidential primary are extremely conservative.

Thirty-eight percent of the billionaire’s backers in the Palmetto State wish the South won the Civil War, The Hill reported. The same number of respondents said they were unsure, while only 24 percent were happy about the war’s outcome.

When asked whether the Confederate battle flag should still be flying at their state Capitol, 70 percent of South Carolina’s GOP voters said “yes.” Last year, Republican Gov. Nikki Haley ordered the removal of the controversial flag from the Statehouse grounds in response to a mass shooting at a historic African-American church in Charleston.

While many of Trump’s critics have accused him of bigotry for proposing a ban on Muslim immigration to the United States, a whopping 80 percent of those polled agreed with him. About one-third said Congress should outlaw the observance of Islam within the country. Forty-four percent did not support making the religion illegal.

Forty percent called for authorities to close all U.S. Muslim mosques, compared with 36 percent who had the opposite view. Sixty-two percent told pollsters they like Trump’s plan to create a national database to register and monitor Muslim Americans.

The poll showed that the real-estate tycoon led rival candidates Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio by 17 percentage points, just a few days before the South Carolina primary.
