Trump Slams Rep. John Lewis For Calling Him ‘Illegitimate’

Congressman John Lewis is “all talk” and “no action,” Donald Trump charged Saturday in response to the Georgia Democrat’s remark that the incoming commander-in-chief will not be a “legitimate” president.

"Congressman John Lewis should spend more time on fixing and helping his district, which is in horrible shape and falling apart (not to mention crime infested) rather than falsely complaining about the election results. All talk, talk, talk - no action or results. Sad,” Trump tweeted. In another message, he wrote: “Congressman John Lewis should finally focus on the burning and crime infested inner-cities of the U.S. I can use all the help I can get!”

CNN noted that Lewis was an icon of the civil-rights movement, having been part of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s inner circle. Lewis sustained serious injuries in a police beating during a 1965 march in Selma, Ala. Throughout his long career as a congressman representing the majority of Atlanta, he has been a strong advocate of racial equality.

While Trump campaigned on a promise to address crime and poverty in the nation’s largest cities, his critics accuse him of offering no meaningful proposals. Trump tried to win the votes of African-Americans by asking them, “What do you have to lose?”

Lewis, who was an ardent supporter of Hillary Clinton, told Chuck Todd on NBC News: “I don’t see this president-elect as a legitimate president.” According to CNN, the lawmaker was responding to recent allegations that the Trump campaign and the Russian government worked together to defeat the Democratic nominee.
