Trump Slammed By Bernie: 'Picking On Undocumented Doesn't Make You Tough'

Sen. Bernie Sanders, speaking at an immigrants-rights rally on Tuesday, told President Trump: “Stop picking on the poor; stop picking on the undocumented.”

The Huffington Post reported that the Vermont independent was among about 100 protesters at the national offices of U.S. Customs and Border Protection. “For the last many hundreds of years, wonderful people against great odds have stood up to fight against racism, sexism, xenophobia and homophobia,” Sanders said. “We have fought against all of those efforts to divide us up. And our message to Mr. Trump is we are not going backwards. We are going forward.”

The senator pointed out that most of the country’s estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants are “hard-working, decent people.” He added: “Our job as Americans, our job as members of Congress, is to pass comprehensive immigration reform and a path toward citizenship. President Trump thinks he’s a tough guy because he’s taking on farm workers who make nine or ten bucks an hour; he’s a tough guy because he can throw moms and dads out of this country. Well, I say to Mr. Trump, ‘If you’re such a tough guy, why don’t you take on the insurance companies and the drug companies and Wall Street?’”

Another speaker at the demonstration, Democratic Rep. Grace Meng of New York, represented all immigrants when she proclaimed: “We are here to tell this administration that this is our country, too.”

The coalition that organized the rally, the Fair Immigration Reform Movement, opposes the Trump administration’s expanded deportation raids and the president’s proposed travel bans. Two federal courts blocked a January executive order that called for a temporary suspension of the refugee-resettlement program, as well as a three-month ban on anyone coming from seven Islamic countries.

Trump’s second executive order, issued about two weeks ago, contained similar language. It also failed to survive a court challenge. The issue may go before the Supreme Court, which will have a conservative majority if the Senate confirms Trump’s nominee.
