Trump Shocks Many After Calling Australia’s Health Care ‘Better’ Than America's

President Trump raised eyebrows Thursday night when he told Australia’s prime minister that his country’s health-care program is superior to the U.S. system.

The Daily Mail reported that Trump, during a joint appearance with Australian leader Malcolm Turnubull in New York City, mentioned the House of Representatives having narrowly approved an Obamacare-replacement bill earlier in the day. “It’s going to be fantastic health care,” the president told reporters. “I shouldn’t say this to our great gentleman and my friend from Australia because you have better health care than we do.”

The remark came as a shock to many since Australia’s single-payer system guaranteeing medical treatment for all its citizens is starkly different than the House bill’s market-based approach. Sen. Bernie Sanders wasted no time in pledging to work with the administration to adopt an Australian-style system. The Vermont independent laughed loudly on MSNBC when the network showed Trump’s comment. “That’s great,” he said. “Let’s take a look at the Australian health-care system. Thank you, Mr. President. Let us move to a Medicare-for-all system that does what every other major country on Earth does: guarantee health care to all people at a fraction of the cost per capita that we spend.”

Sanders added: “Mr. President, you’re right. In Australia and every other major country on Earth, they guarantee health care to all people. They don’t throw 24 million people off health insurance.” The senator was referring to an estimate by the bipartisan Congressional Budget Office that at least 24 million Americans would have lost access to affordable coverage if the first version of the Republicans’ American Health Care Act had become law. The measure the House approved Thursday was an amended AHCA, which the CBO has not yet analyzed.

Sanders later tweeted: “Thank you, Mr. Trump, for admitting that universal health care is the better way to go. I’ll be sure to quote you on the floor of the Senate.” The following morning, the senator told his Twitter followers: “Yes, Mr. Trump, the Australian health-care system is a lot better than ours and infinitely better than the disastrous bill you supported.”
