Trump Revives Keystone, Dakota Access Pipelines

Construction of two hotly debated oil pipelines may now proceed, thanks to President Trump.

According to The Hill, Trump signed memos that qualify the Keystone XL and Dakota Access projects for some of the necessary permits. The president claimed the pipelines will provide jobs for construction crews and steelworkers. “We will build our own pipeline, we will build our own pipes, like we used to, in the old days,” he said.

The memos reverse the Obama administration’s decisions to block the Keystone project and delay the pipeline in North Dakota, which has sparked protests by Native Americans who fear the “black snake” will poison drinking water and cause other environmental damage on their reservations. Alternative-energy advocates oppose continued massive investments in fossil-fuel extraction, while the oil industry has aggressively lobbied for new pipelines.

The Hill pointed out that the project developers still face regulatory hurdles. Trump indicated his administration plans to propose new requirements, perhaps including a provision giving the government some of Keystone’s profits.

As the president signed the first memo, he proclaimed: “This is with regard to the construction of the Keystone pipeline, a subject that’s been in dispute, and it’s subject to a renegotiation of terms by us. We are going to renegotiate some of the terms, and, if they’d like, we’ll see if we can get that pipeline built. A lot of jobs; 28,000 jobs; great construction jobs.”
