Trump Rejects His Running Mate’s Views About Syria During Debate

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump acknowledged during his debate Sunday night with Democrat Hillary Clinton that he and GOP vice-presidential candidate Mike Pence strongly disagree about the proper U.S. role in Syria.

Politico reported that debate moderator Martha Raddatz of ABC News, in posing a question to Trump, commented: “I want to remind you what your running mate said. He said provocations by Russia need to be met with American strength and that if Russia continues to be involved in airstrikes along with the Syrian forces, the United States of America should be prepared to use military force to strike the military targets of the Assad regime.”

Trump replied simply: “He and I haven’t spoken and I disagree.” He then changed the subject. Analysts suggested that the short response illustrated an erosion in the relationship between the two Republican candidates. Pence disappeared from the campaign trail during the weekend, following Friday’s release of a 2005 audio recording in which Trump bragged about having kissed and groped women. The Indiana governor withdrew from a Saturday rally in Wisconsin hosted by House Speaker Paul Ryan, who had already told Trump he was no longer welcome at the event.

Pence praised his running mate’s performance at the debate, and pledged his continued allegiance. That disappointed some Republicans, who have called on Trump to drop out of the race and allow his vice-presidential pick to be the nominee. Many party members fear that Trump is doomed to lose the election to Clinton. Dozens of GOP politicians have rescinded their endorsements of the controversial candidate.
