Trump Questions The Presidential Eligibility Of Ted Cruz

Donald Trump wants to make America great again, and he believes that starts with electing natural-born citizens.

When Obama was first elected, Trump had openly called for proof that Obama was born in Hawaii. Now, Trump is focusing on Sen. Ted Cruz. In an interview with MyFoxNY Trump said, “Well he’s got, you know, a hurdle that nobody else seems to have at this moment. It’s a hurdle and somebody could certainly look at it very seriously. He was born in Canada … if you know … and when we all studied our history lessons … you’re supposed to be born in this country, so I just don’t know how the courts would rule on it. But it’s an additional hurdle that he has that no one else seems to have."

Most legal scholars and media outlets have deemed that Cruz's birthplace does not present a "hurdle" towards his presidential aspirations. In 2013 when Trump was asked whether or not he thought Cruz would be eligible to run, Trump said "Perhaps not." The Texas Tribune wrote, "Bottom line: Despite being born in Canada, Cruz can be considered a natural-born U.S. Citizen.” This is because Cruz's mother was an American citizen.

Trump also discussed Cruz's creativity with campaign slogans by saying, "Well, you know the line of 'Make America Great Again,' the phrase, that was mine, I came up with about a year ago, and I kept using it and everybody's now using it, they're loving it, I don't know I guess I should copyright it.” When asked if he would be seeking the presidential nomination, Trump responded "I'm looking at it very seriously. I get the biggest crowds and I get a great response, so we're going to see. I'll decide sometime by June. "
