Trump Praises Reagan, But Slams His Trade Policies

President Trump said this week that while he considers Ronald Reagan the best president of his lifetime, the two men’s positions on international-trade issues are significantly different.

According to Business Insider, Trump told Fox News’ Sean Hannity: “Well, I like Reagan. I didn’t like him on trade, but other than trade, I liked him very much and he was OK on trade, but not great.” The president added that his 1980s predecessor in the White House was “not as strong on trade as I felt he should have been.” He said he “disagreed with him on some things, primarily trade.”

During last year’s campaign, Trump lauded Reagan for charging Japan a tariff to sell some of its products in the United States. “His tariff on Japanese motorcycles was 45 percent, and his tariff to shield America’s semiconductor industry was 100 percent, and that had a big impact, folks; a big impact,” Trump said.

However, The Economist pointed out that Reagan also was a champion of “free trade.” The former president, in his first White House race in 1980, advocated a U.S.-Mexico trade deal. He also backed a trade pact with Canada in 1988, and set the stage for what eventually became the North American Free Trade Agreement.

In 1989, in a letter to Congress, Reagan declared: “It is the primary responsibility of governments to promote sound and stable financial markets that encourage international commerce and to reduce barriers to trade at home and abroad. Reducing these barriers will allow markets, not governments, to determine the goods that society produces.”
