Trump: Not Paying Taxes ‘Makes Me Smart’

Donald Trump admitted Monday night that he has not always paid income taxes, claiming “that makes me smart.”

During the first debate between the Republican nominee and his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton pointed out that Trump has publicly released tax records from just two years. She said the documents indicated that he “paid nothing in federal taxes.”

Trump has refused to make public his tax returns from recent years, arguing that he cannot do so until the Internal Revenue Service completes an audit. However, according to IRS officials and other tax experts, an audit does not prevent someone from releasing their returns.

The real-estate mogul boasted that his income totaled $690 million last year. “I’ve been under audit almost 15 years,” he said. “I know a lot of wealthy people that have never been audited. I say, ‘Have you been audited?’ I get audited almost every year. In a way, I should be complaining. … I don’t mind it, it’s almost become a way of life, I get audited by the IRS. … I will release my tax returns against my lawyers’ wishes when (Clinton) releases her 33,000 emails that have been deleted.”

Clinton responded by suggesting reasons that Trump refuses to reveal his tax records. “First, maybe he’s not as rich as he says is. Second, maybe he’s not as charitable as he claims to be,” she said. “Third, we don’t know all of his business dealings, but we have been told through investigative reporting that he owes $650 million to Wall Street and foreign banks. Or maybe he doesn’t want the American people, all of you watching tonight, to know that he’s paid nothing in federal taxes.”
