Trump Names 11 Possible Supreme Court Nominees

Donald Trump’s list of 11 judges he says he would consider for the Supreme Court is a “conservative dream team,” according to CNN law expert Jeffrey Toobin.

The Associated Press reported that the Republican presidential front-runner’s short list of candidates to succeed the late Justice Antonin Scalia includes six judges that former President George W. Bush appointed to federal appeals courts. The other five sit on state supreme courts.

Republicans hope to prevent President Obama from filling the high-court vacancy, to allow the next commander in chief to make the appointment. The AP noted that the next justice could be a swing vote, as the current eight members of the court consist of four liberals and four conservatives. In March, Obama chose the moderate Merrick Garland, an appeals court judge, to replace the conservative Scalia. However, the Republican leadership in the Senate has not scheduled hearings to consider the appointment.

Each of the 11 people Trump named this week is associated with the right-wing Federalist Society. The appeals court judges on his list are Steven Colloton of Iowa, Raymond Gruender of Missouri, Thomas Hardiman of Pennsylvania, Raymond Kethledge of Michigan, William Pryor of Alabama and Diane Sykes of Wisconsin. The state supreme court justices include Allison Eid of Colorado, Joan Larsen of Michigan, Thomas Lee of Utah, David Stras of Minnesota and Don Willett of Texas.
