Trump: If Russia Interfered In The Election, It's The Obama Administration's Fault

President Trump, who still does not acknowledge that Russia tried to influence last year’s election, argued Thursday that if any such interference happened it was Barack Obama’s fault, The Hill reported.

“By the way, if Russia was working so hard on the 2016 Election, it all took place during the Obama Admin. Why didn't they stop them?” Trump tweeted. U.S. intelligence agencies have accused Russian leader Vladimir Putin of ordering cyber attacks on the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton campaign manager John Podesta. Russian operatives also may have been responsible for false, anti-Clinton news being placed on social media during the presidential race.

At a media briefing on Tuesday, White House press secretary Sean Spicer would not answer a reporter’s question about whether Trump accepts the intelligence community’s findings. “I have not sat down and talked to him about that specific thing,” the spokesman said. “Obviously, we've been dealing with a lot of other issues today.”

Multiple investigations are under way to find out whether anyone in the Trump campaign conspired with Russia to meddle with the election. Though several of the president’s associates had contacts with the Russian ambassador to the United States during and after the campaign, Trump continues to deny that his team worked with the Russians to defeat Clinton. He has called the investigations, by Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller and a number of congressional committees, a “witch hunt.”

On Thursday, the president claimed that Jeh Johnson, Obama’s Homeland Security Department secretary, supported his case in testimony to the House Intelligence Committee on Wednesday. Trump tweeted that Johnson “is latest top intelligence official to state there was no grand scheme between Trump & Russia.”

According to The Hill, the president misrepresented the former cabinet official’s statement. Johnson, when asked whether he was aware of any collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, told the lawmakers: “Not beyond what has been out there open-source, and not beyond anything that I'm sure this committee has already seen and heard before, directly from the intelligence community. So anything I'd have on that is derivative of what the intelligence community has — and the law-enforcement community.”

In another tweet, Trump accused the Democratic National Committee of turning down the government’s assistance “to protect against hacks.” He wrote: “Why did the DNC REFUSE to turn over its Server to the FBI, and still hasn’t? It’s all a big Dem scam and excuse for losing the election! … It’s all a big Dem HOAX.”

Democratic Party spokeswoman Adrienne Watson responded: “The DNC was contacted by (the Department of Homeland Security) months after the DNC worked closely with the FBI to remedy the intrusion. The DNC then provided DHS with detailed information about the intrusion. The intelligence community has no doubt that the Russians attacked the DNC in an effort to disrupt our election. The only person who disputes this is Donald Trump.”

After winning the election, Trump told Time magazine: “I don’t believe they interfered. That became a laughing point — not a talking point, a laughing point. Anytime I do something, they say, ‘Oh, Russia interfered.’ It could be Russia, and it could be China and it could be some guy in his home in New Jersey.”
